An apostille is a special stamp (approximately 10cm x 10cm) that is applied to public documents and does not need any further legalization in the 1961 Hague Convention countries. This type of legalization authenticates a signature affixed on the document and certifies the signer's quality and a seal or a stamp borne by the document.
The 1961 Convention prescribes that the country issuing a document should affix an apostille on this document. The top part of the stamp must have the French phrase «APOSTILLE (Convention de la Haye du 5 Octobre 1961)». Documents certified in this way are received without further legalization in all countries-signatories of the 1961 Hague Convention.
